Just go climb a tree

One of the things that bothers me about the current climate of raising children is how OVERprotective parents can be. Granted, some degree of protection is absolutely necessary, but it saddens me to think that our children cannot experience the things we used to do.

One of those things is climbing trees. Did you get to do that? I did. It was the best.

In our very small backyard, we have this slightly sick and sad tree that grows in the corner. Our neighbors hate it - they cut off the branches anytime they grow over the fence. The thing is, it has become a great elementary climbing tree for the kids. My older boys used to climb it, now the little kids do. They love it as much as any backyard playstructure. And it didn't cost us a dime!

Simple things - going back to basics

We built a platform, with ladder, in a tree for our youngest son. Not a day passed, in good weather, that I didn't pack him a lunch and he'd head out for that tree, climb the ladder and sit on the platform, eating and daydreaming. It was his very own special place. We had a niece and nephew who were never allowed to play in the dirt. While our kids were busy digging forts, the cousins would just have to stand by and watch. I never minded that the kids got dirty (I had five of them, by the way), because they always got bathed before they went to bed each night.

Granny, you are my kind of woman. My kids would love a tree that was high enough for a platform or treehouse. Maybe in our next house....

I agree! Josh loves climbing the trees at our current home. When we move into our new house, the trees will be too small and young to climb. But, as I pointed out to Josh, we do have a 4 ft tall boulder retaining wall in the backyard that he can climb and jump off of to his heart's content. We gotta let our kids be kids!

Becky - seriously! When you see how much joy kids (especially active ones) get from climbing and jumping, it's the best :-) thanks for saying hi!
