Simplfying Life

There is no question that if you talk to me, like you say - "Hi Shannan - how are you?", chances are that I will say, "I'm crazy, I'm kooky, my kids are driving me nuts." Seriously, I feel like that is all I say these days.

But the REALLLL unexaggerated truth is that my life is really pretty simple. Pretty low key. And I designed it that way because of the above statement (I'm crazy and my kids are nuts!) One thing I learned very quickly is that if you decide to have more than three children, you MUST step back from being a supermom, superfriend, superperson. You have to pick a few things you really value and stick to them. Because if you do anything else, you will BURN OUT and burn out fast.

Here is what I have picked to spend my energy on:

1) My family and their Health (through food and environment)
2) my garden (kind of applies to above statement but also to my own mental sanity)
3) Sewing and designed (fulfils my creative energy)
4) surrounding myself with only positive (friends, neighbors, books, media)

So if you find me backing out or not saying 'yes' to something or hiding out - it is because I have to stick to my BIG FOUR.

That being said, here are some of my latest creative endeavors.

Simple Apple Crumble for breakfast. Get a few quarts of Canned Apple Pie Filling (made with honey, not sugar), make a simple crumb topping, pop in oven upon waking and everyone wakes to a delicious smell and easy, good food.

I'm slowly ridding my kitchen of plastic and converting everything to glass, stainless steel, and cast iron. Here is my kids' plate, bowl, and cup drawer full of IKEA plastics.
I'm scouting Goodwill and garage sales to replace the kids' plates with Corelle dinnerware. I'm kind of loving the throwback to the 70's with the pattern and design of Corelle. Plus, it's make of glass so I can microwave away and not worry about my kids' food.

I'm adding vintage Pyrex to my food storage arsenal. All the plastic storage containers are gone and slowly being replaced by glass storage - all bought secondhand at thrift stores and garage sales.

More vintage Pyrex (in the back). In the front you can see glass bowls with red plastic lids. I dont' like these as much. I like the GLASS lids that vintage Pyrex has!

Batman pants. I found a vintage sheet with batman cartoons on it and cut/sewed a few new pants for the bat boys in my life. BIG HIT!

Lane's birthday dress. Sewn from a Violette fields pattern called Stella. I love this dress and it was so fun to sew this for her!

That's it for today~

Great post Shannan - hope you don't mind if I copy you, I think I already have mentally, but I'm going to simplify it more and then write out the 4 things that I'm going to focus my energy on, you are 100% right that it is the only way to stay sane!

Wow! Look at you! You've been busy! I still think you're pretty super but you're right. Sometimes we need to slow things down and concentrate on the little things in our lives and those most special to us. =0)
