I come from the camp of "Put on a Sweater"

See this?
That is my preferred temperature of house. After Jeremy leaves for work and the kids leave for school, I put a sweatshirt on Chase and let the cold weather take over the house so I can stop sweating.

Once the kids and Jeremy get home , I shed layers and allow the furnace to heat up the space to a toasty 67 degrees. If guests come over and they don't remove their coats, I may let the temperature soar to 68-69 degrees, but that takes a lot out of me. If anyone in the immediate family complains of a cold house, I bark at them, "Just put on a sweater!"

I know my dad and stepdad would be proud of my sweater mentality and minimal heating of the house.

Now come over anytime during the summer and if the outside temp is above 85 degrees - you better believe my central air is on full blast. Blame the hormones.

Gender Bender

Dear Grandma D.,
I absolutely love to help my mom and dad in the kitchen. Unfortunately, I am a very messy cook. My mom has taken to put on me the lovely apron you made for my baby sister. Daddy cringes and the brothers laugh at me. Perhaps you could make a more studly version for me? I promise to make you something extra special when you come to visit next.

love your chef extrodonnaire,
Chase

Making lemonade out of lemons

We have three industrial fans blowing on our kitchen floor most of the time. We have an industrial dehumidifier that takes 15 gallons of water out of the air per day.

Why not dry my laundry in the kitchen and save some energy from the dryer?

Today I am grateful

Thanks to this:
My kitchen now looks like this:
Allow me to Explain
Yesterday, I woke up early and came out to the kitchen to discover our dishwasher had broken overnight and dumped water all over the kitchen floor. I mopped up the water - cursed the stupid dishwasher and went back to my room to get ready.
I then left for a 45 minute meeting at the school.
When I returned, I noticed that more water had pooled on the floor in front of the dishwasher which meant that even more water had accumulated under the flooring/dishwasher and was leaking out. So I mopped it up again - called Jeremy to tell him the circumstance - we agreed that I should go out that morning and start shopping for new dishwashers and we would deal with the water mess later.
I go back to my room to touchup my makeup when I smelled a burning smell.
I went into the kitchen to see if I had left something on the burner or if a candle had smoked out, but no, there was nothing I saw burning so I went back to my room. I continued to get ready when the smell got stronger - this is where pregnancy smelling ability really comes in handy. The smell was definitely a more electrical burning smell - like when you leave something on your burner or whatever. I go back into the kitchen - the smell was stronger and now I heard a popping sound - like a loud sparking sound. I looked under my kitchen sink and smoke started pouring out. I immediately grabbed Chase and the dogs and the phone and went outside to call 911. We are so lucky to have a fire station right down the street. The fireman arrived within minutes and went into the house. They turned off all the electricity to the house and isolated a small electrical fire that was starting under our kitchen sink.

The fireman said that in another ten minutes, the whole wire would have ignited and a full blown fire would have happened. So many things about this story make my heart and soul so grateful and so happy and so lucky that circumstances happened the way they did.
  • I was home - not at my school meeting like I had been an hour earlier.
  • I was home - not shopping for dishwashers like I was getting ready to go to.
  • I was home - not in Portland all day like I was the day before.
  • I smelled everything early - thank goodness for a keen sense of smell.
  • I heard the popping sound and paid attention to the location.
  • The firemen arrived quickly and saved my house and kitchen from a potentially devastating fire situation.

I can't begin to tell you how thankful I feel. The water from the dishwasher did in fact leak all under the laminate flooring in the kitchen - including where the wire goes to the dishwasher. That wire was not covered in protective conduit, so i was exposed and the water must have seeped into a nick or scratch in the wire - thus sparking and about to ignite.

We called our insurance company - Amerprise through Costco's executive membership plan - and they started a claim right away. They also arranged for emergency services and we had an electrician to the house within 2 hours to repair the wire that caught on fire - repair the breaker that did not switch over when the water overloaded the circuit - and turned on our electricity to the house again. They also had a general contractor at our house within four hours to rip up all the flooring, remove the dishwasher, get industrial fans and dehumidifiers in our kitchen to dry up the water damage.

So it looks like a new kitchen floor and dishwasher for us. Honestly, as I said before, I'm just so grateful that we caught everything in time and that our great insurance and contractors have made it very comfortable for us while we repair all the damage.

What can I do to get through Jan and Feb?

Okay, so the holidays/birthday crazy is over. The last of the holiday inspired guests have cleared the premises. Time to figure out what to do the next few months.

I don't know about you, but this is the first year (well if I think about my dark depression this time last year, this would be the second year) that the Northwest gray cloudy and rainy skies are getting to me. Day in and day out it tends to be dismal. And I feel blah, blah, blah. I even had a full blown panic attack - my first since last April. this is the time last year when I thought I was dying. I thought my body was being overtaken by a brain tumor - but alas, it was just the mind numbing effects of depression and anxiety. But I don't want to go into that slippery slope again so I have invented a list of to-do's and social activities to hopefully keep me and my brain occupied through these dreary winter months.

I've updated my goodreads lists and hope to keep it going. Want to be my friend? I can add you.

I bought a ventilated mask and I am painting:
*two end tables
*our coffee table
*the front door
*the hallway (the hall of shame)
* and the baseboards

I am also in the process of recovering several pieces of furniture - inspired by some money left to me by my dear Grammie Annis. I know she would be happy that the money is being spent that way.

And I'm getting started on the nursery. Chase and new Baby will have to share a room for a few years so time to turn a boy room into a boy/girl room. Wait til you see what I'm coming up with.

I figure those projects should get me through the next two months and then it's time to start the garden!!

So let's catch up and get down to business

A few weeks later and I'm happy to report that we survived the holidays! And that is no small feat - we have Christmas, 2 birthdays, and New Year's Eve all in a two week period. Plus we were blessed with non stop family visits, so you can tell that would make for a very full, fun, crazy, and happy holiday season.

My mom and Bryan were able to come up and celebrate Christmas with us. Traditional Egg Benedict and Mimosa breakfast was served on Christmas morning and left us with full stomach and happy spirits.

Oh - I forgot to mention this and let me not get too ahead of myself - but Christmas Eve Poppy (aka Bryan my stepdad) dressed as Santa and met the children at the front door with a dry "ho ho ho" (inside joke - you had to be there to understand his ho ho's). Anyway, Santa is met with mixed emotions in our house. I'm not a huge fan of forcing Santa on your children- neither is Jackson. But Blake decided a few years back that he would not accept this family's stance on Santa and formally introduced the jolly character to our family. Therefore Santa has been a part of our holiday season for the past few years and Bryan delivered in his holiday rendition of the cheerful holiday icon.

Blake was happy.

Jackson was not.
Christmas morning - the boxes spilled out of the front room. And we said we were going to be scaling back this year!~

Chase enjoyed himself

Biggest hit of the season - RockBand 2.

Soon after we celebrated Blake's 7th birthday.
He had a surprise visitor come on the train from Seattle (Uncle Josh) and a surprise birthday party with a few of his friends at Pietro's Pizza.

The next biggest thing that happened was Jackson got to take his first flying lesson in Salem. My dad (his Papa Mike) and christy (dad's fiancee) came down from Seattle to participate in the big day.
Jackson was able to fly Papa Mike, Blake, and the flight instructor Jim.

Probably the happiest 10 year old you can ever imagine

Jackson was able to take control of the plane during takeoff and several maneuvers in the air. He also lined up the aircraft to the runway and then assisted the landing. He logged .5 hours in his new official pilot's log. Here's to a new happy career direction for Jackson!

Hello 2010

I'm back to post again about daily life adventures in the crazy Deshazer household. Although I'm going to say this for the record - I have about one hour right now at this moment before Chase wakes up and I decided I'm going to clean up the house and watch some BRAVO TV. Sorry blogger - I really do want to blog.
Hopefully really really soon I will post because it has been nutty crazy around here.
